ARTISTS IN CHINA - Inside The Contemporary Studio

ARTISTS IN CHINA

The contemporary Chinese art scene is booming.

Beijing is bursting with new art spaces and galleries, and Shanghai and Guangzhou have also seen the rapid development of artists’ spaces. This unprecedented interaction of galleries, art centres, private and public museums, community-based residences and studios – and, of course, the artists themselves – has created a thriving artworld.

Artists in China documents the compelling art and interiors that have emerged as a result of the recent dynamism in the Chinese contemporary art world, showing spaces linked to more than fifty artists working in China today, most of which have never been published before.

With more than 500 powerful photographs, this large format book brilliantly captures the eclectic atmosphere of this rich setting for contemporary art. Essays place each of the artists within their contexts.

Philip Tinari is a writer and curator specializing in contemporary Chinese art. He has worked in China as an associate curator, a translator for The New York Times, and as a reporter in the Beijing bureau of The Wall Street Journal.
Mario Ciampi has contributed to many books, including Tuscany • Artists • Homes and The Classic Italian Interior, both published by Thames & Hudson.
