William Randolph Hearst (1863–1951) was one of the most famous men in America in the first half of the twentieth century. His life as a newspaper magnate and politician was caricatured in Orson Welles's Citizen Kane and his home in San Simeon, California, (known to the world as Hearst Castle but called by its owner La Cuesta Encantada, or the Enchanted Hill) is still one of the most visited house museums in America. During the 1920s and 1930s, his appetite for purchasing art accounted for fully one quarter of the world's market and his collection furnished no fewer than six separate residences. Hearst: The Collector takes the reader inside each of these palatial residences, illustrating, for the first time, the most interesting pieces from Hearst's vast holdings, which were dispersed over the years among many museums throughout the world, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the J. Paul Getty Museum, the National Gallery of Art, the Louvre, the Rijksmueum, the Victoria & Albert Museum and the Tower of London.
