This is the first book in English to survey Italian art of this century in entirety. It gives a general view of the whole century as well as a detailed account of a particulary modern Italian visual idiom. The book is divided into four sections according to major turning points in history and the development of artistic movements:

1900-1919 Divisionist movement, Futurism, Metaphysical painting and the solitary figure of Modigliani.

1919-1945 Fascism and Culture in Italy, Giorgio Morandi, Second Futurism.

1945-1968 Realism and the Post-war Debate, Informel and Abstraction i Italian Art, Lucio Fontana and Piero Manzoni.

1968-1988 Contemporary Italy and Arte Povera.
