PETER LAND - ABSOLUTE PERFECTION

PETER LAND (1966-)

The oeuvre of Peter Land revolves around the subject of man’s failure to accomplish the everyday and existential tasks of life. The artist presents the precarious human condition in a wide variety of media. In one video, for example, an entertainer flops in front of his audience and falls, drunk as a skunk, off his stool. In another work, a painter keeps slipping off a ladder while he’s working, or an arm waving vainly in distress juts out of the top of a large-scale spatial installation made of stone. Anyone viewing this comical scene finds the laughter sticking in his or her throat. At the same time, Land avails himself of an artistic signature that does not compromise his figures. The catalogue presents the artist’s entire body of work in images as well as in texts on such topics as the theatrical or the image of the man in Land’s oeuvre, along with his examination of issues such as education and the meaning of childhood.
