DUBUFFET

JEAN DUBUFFET (1901-1985)

From his early transformations of the human figure into powerful archetypes, through his extensive experiments with organic and inorganic matter as the substance, both physical and conceptual, of his paintings, sculptures, and collages, to his phenomenal Hourloupe series - culminating in monumental works of sculpture and architecture and the performance work Coucou Bazar - Dubuffet has constantly broadened the boundaries of art. In the process, he has exerted an enormous influence of generations of younger artists.

Through all the different approaches and technical procedures, Dubuffet has consistently put before us works that challenge our preconceived ideas of \"reality,\" that seduce us into a new vision, that force our experience and intellect and imagination into play. The whole of his output can be viewed as an intensely rich and highly original theater of the imagination, in which the mind of the viewer plays an active role.
