Hans Silvester - The Joy of Kites

HANS SILVESTER (1938-)

Over the course of his many trips around the world, from China to Guatemala, from Italy to Japan, photographer Hans Silvester has captured the beauty and grace of kites, which belong to the worlds of children and adults alike.

For thousands of years, kites have allowed human beings to possess the sky. Unable to fly but haunted by dreams of Icarus, people throughout the world have used their imagination to design these fragile but brilliant objects.

Whether they resemble fish, dragons, birds or mythical animals, or are just bits of coloured paper, kites have offered wings to the people that hold their strings, giving them a sensation of freedom.

Hans Silvester began taking photographs at the age of twelve. A dedicated defender of nature, he published the international bestseller 'Cats of the Greek Islands'. His most recent assignments took him to Rajasthan, India and Ethiopia, the latter of which led to his books 'Ethiopia' and 'Natural Fashion', both published by Thames & Hudson.
