GILLIAN WHITE. Dance in Steel, 40 Years`Work - Tanz in Eisen, Werke aus 40 Jahren

GILLEN WHITE (1939-)

Sculptor Gillian White has gained wide recognition for her monumental steel sculptures, the majority of them commissioned for public spaces in Switzerland. White’s unique contribution to contemporary Swiss sculpture has never been examined until now.
Gillian White. Dance in Steel focuses on her public sculptures and her art-in-architecture works, as well as her paintings and small, playful sculptures. Many of Gillian White’s abstract shapes are informed by her early education at the Elmhurst School of Dance in Camberley, Surrey, and her life-long interest in contemporary dance. The many rich images of her precisely composed works are complemented by critical essays and personal texts by art writers and contemporaries. A beautiful introduction to the oeuvre of one of Europe’s most significant contemporary sculptors.
Gillian White, born in Orpington, Kent (UK) in 1939, attended ballet school but for health reasons had to give up her training to be a dancer at the age of 15. Instead she decided to study art at St Martin’s School of Art in London. From 1956 to 1960 she was taught there by Anthony Caro and Elizabeth Frink. In 1960 White went to Paris where she studied under Ossip Zadkine at the École Nationale des Beaux-Arts and worked on large-scale sculpture in the studio of François Stahly. She met the sculptor Albert Siegenthaler in Paris and married him in 1962. The couple moved to London and had two children before settling down in Switzerland in 1966. There Gillian White has continued to develop her own work until the present day. She has received considerable recognition and taken part in numerous solo and group exhibitions.
