During a period af eight years exploring Oceania and the Americans, James Cook (1728-79) and the teams of artists and scientists that traveled as his passengers amassed a vast array of exquisite cultural art objects. The book illustrates and documents 500 of the finest of these objects for the fist time. Amongst the scientists on the voyages were the German scholar Johann Reinhold Foster and his son, they returned to Germany with a vast collection, where it lay more or less undisturbed for over 200 years. It is only recently that specialists have rediscovered the historical and cultural importense of this collection, now owned by the University in Göttingen.
