MERLYN EVANS

MERLYN EVANS (1910-1973)

This is the first full-scale monograph on the life and work of the remarkable British artist Merlyn Evans. He was born at Cardiff, and when he was three his family moved to Glasgow. Precociously gifted, he studied at Glasgow School of Art ( exhibiting at the Royal Scottish Academy in 1930 and 1931) and at the Royal College of Art in London.

Deeply affected by the poverty and violence that he saw in Glasgow during the depressed years of the late 1920s and early 1930s. Evans very soon commited himself to an art that engaged with real life. Cubism, abstraction, Surrealism and his studies of ethnographic art contributed to a distinctive visual language, reflecting his psychological, ethical and political concerns.

Mel Gooding is an art critic, writer and curator.
