PISSARRO - Critical Catalogue of Paintings. I-III

CAMILLE PISSARRO (1830-1903)
In 1939, Ludovic-Rodolphe Pissarro, with Lionello Venturi, published the Catalogue Raisonné of his father's paintings, pastels and gouaches. The present Critical Catalogue of Camille Pissarro's paintings is based on this first book yet it makes an innovative contribution to knowledge of the work of this great painter through hitherto unpublished documents and paintings.
The first volume (French or English edition) includes:
• A survey of Camille Pissarro's vision of history and art, by Joachim Pissarro.
• A study of Pissarro's early achievements in the West Indies and his artistic collaboration with Fritz Melbye, by Richard R. Brettell.
• A year-by-year analysis of the close relationships between Camille Pissarro and his principal dealer, Paul Durand-Ruel, by Claire Durand-Ruel Snollaerts.
• A complete biography of the artist, based on an impressive documentation gathered by Alexia de Buffévent and illustrated with documents from many unpublished photographic archives.

• A bibliography and an extensive list of exhibitions.

The second and third volumes (French/English bilingual edition) constitute the Critical Catalogue: 1,529 paintings (213 unpublished or re-discovered), most of them illustrated in colour, each with a detailed description and analysis.
Joachim Pissarro, a curator for the Department of Painting and Sculpture at the Museum of Modern Art, New York, has taught at Yale University and Hunter College, City University of New York. He has written several books on Impressionism, including a monograph published in 1993 on Camille Pissarro, his great-grandfather. His latest book, Altering Egos: Cézanne and Pissarro; Johns and Rauschenberg, will be published next summer by Cambridge University Press.
He has curated several exhibitions including The Impressionist and the City: Pissarro's Series Paintings (Dallas, Philadelphia, London, 1993); Rouen, les Cathédrales de Monet (Rouen, 1994); Camille Pissarro, Impressionist Innovator (Jerusalem, 1995); and From Manet to Gauguin, Masterpieces from Swiss Private Collections (London, 1995), Cézanne-Pissarro (MoMA, New York 2005).
