The Andy Warhol Show

The catalog celebrates the revolutionary role of Warhol not only in art but also into visual communication, graphics and design.

Andy almost never spoke. “If you want to know everything about me”, he would say, “just look at the surfaces of my paintings, my films and myself, and there I am. There is nothing behind the façade.” despite his feeling for paradox and his pungent and ironic manner, there was always some truth in his words. He had a special gift: he was able to fascinate people even though he kept his distance.
Everything seemed interesting: his wigs, his silences, his singular appearance, his small rucksack, his voice, his bags full of things, his banal and sometimes embarrassing questions. There was nothing about him that was not involved in making art, and his manner, almost a language in itself, was his strategy used in order to adhere to the spirit of the times: like a seer his intuition showed him were we were going and that intuition took form on the canvas. It is no surprise that many critics consider his influence decisive for future generations of artists. (Daniela Morera)

Curated by Gianni Mercurio and Daniela Morera, this volume – the catalogue for the exhibition held at the Milan Triennial, one of the most original and comprehensive exhibitions on Warhol to be held in Europe – celebrates the influence and revolutionary role that he played not only in art but also in visual communication, fashion, graphics and design.
About 200 paintings, photographs (of or about Andy Warhol), graphic works, drawings – including the drawings by the young Warhol, illustrations for New York fashion magazines – as well as the famous covers of “Interview”, film footage, documents of fashion and art objects, all seen within a broad philological structure which helps the reader to understand the complex artist who was the prince of Pop Art and an emblem of American culture in the sixties and seventies.
