ANDREW WYETH - The Helga Pictures

ANDREW WYETH (1917 - 2009)

Wyeth's ability as a painter needs no endorsement - his technical skills and imagery are superb. To say this is an artist's book for artists would be pretentious in the extreme... although it would contain a germ of truth. It is my feeling that if you are not interested in the creative process - how a scrap of an idea is worked up into a finished painting - then this book may be less than fascinating for you. There are a great number of pencil sketches showing how the figure was refined, composition improved by slight orientation and anatomical bumps 'ironed out' so to speak without resorting to the degree of abstraction that Modigliani did - but abstracting none the less as all artists must.

The book is also virtually free from arty farty claptrap - the cause of so much wasted ink and paper - allowing the pictures to speak for themselves. There are some short quotes by Wyeth which are most revealing and provide an insight into the man's character.
