Folk Art in Greenland - throughout a Thousand Years

Greenland has always fascinated people, both those who have lived off the land and those who have journeyed across it for shorter or longer periods, such as various groups of Inuit, the Norse, whalers and missionaries.

Through his choice of 250 objects Asger Jörn has given a completely new insight into a milennium of Greenland's cultural history. The oldest objects are from around 900 and the most recent from the 1960s. The photographs were taken in 1964- 65 before the production of souvenirs really became established, although, in the more recent objects, a commencing mass production can be seen.

By his choice of objects, Jorn presents a rarelyseen artistic understanding of the interplay between the hunter, nature and the hunted animal without regard for contexts in time or space. Together with the French photographer Gerard Franceschi, he has been able to place the objects in a renewed context. It is minimalist art that is represented here and the viewer forgets that many objects are only a few centimetres high. The text of the book was written in collaboration by Tinna Mobjerg and Jens Rosing. The book also contains a large number of drawings by Jens Rosing showing several of the objects in füll and placed in a different context from that which Jörn chose to show in his pictorial composition.
