THE PALACE OF PROJECTS

ILYA KABAKOV (1933-)

In their first collaboration, Ilya and Emilia Kabakov built an immense, spiraling multi-story canvas-and-wood structure lit from within like a Chinese lantern. Inside, the Kabakovs installed 65 projects that ranged from the sublime to the common-place and included proposals for gaining self-awareness by becoming a beggar or an angel; for punishing household objects for our mistfortunes; for redistributing the world\'s energy supply with space-based transmitters; for \"cloud management\" through a system of pumps and pipes; and even for taking a vacation without ever leaving your bed. Through photographs and essays by the artists, this publication documents the development and realization of \"The Palace of Projects\".

The Palace of Projects
More than 60 designs and models for a better world are presented by Ilya and Emilia Kabakov in their installation \"The Palace of Projects\" at the Kokerei Zollverein in Essen. In this spiral-shaped, walk-through sculpture, which reminds one of Tatlin\'s \"Monument\", the Kabakovs realize the ideas and dreams of fictitious people. They lend winds to fantasy and transport the imagination beyond the commonplace into a world in which everything is possible. Models and texts – at times humorous, at times lost in dreams, at times serious and sure of what the future will bring – play with the great utopias of the 20th century. Visitors make their way through this labyrinthine building which, like a Chinese lantern, illuminates the interior of the industrial building in which it stands. They sit down at tables, read, look about them and forget the time...

A building within a building
\"The Palace of Projects\" is installed in the former salt store of the now disused coking plant. The salt store was converted into an exhibition hall in 2001. This building within a building, with its objects and texts, is a \"total installation\" in the Kabakov sense: a room completely transformed into a fictitious museum. This is where the utopian projects of the late 20th century have been resumed, where the lives and dreams of the people of the former Soviet Union have been visualized and realized.

Ilya Kabakov
Ilya Kabakov, born in Dnjepropetrovsk/Ukraine in 1933, became the leading light of Moscow Conceptualism during the 1970s; his studio was the centre of the unofficial Russian art scene. In 1987, in the wake of perestroika, Kabakov moved to the West and acquired world fame in next to no time. His installations reflect the world of the Soviet past and the collective and individual memories associated with it. Today, Ilya Kabakov lives with his wife Emilia in New York. His installations are shown in significant exhibitions all over the world and can also be seen in the great art museums of the world.
