BARNETT NEWMAN. Bilder, Skulpturen, Graphik

Barnett Newman (1905-1970)
Barnett Newman, one of the most important and influential painters of the post-war period discovered his own characteristic mode of expression in 1948 in his Onement I with a large, homogenous color field interrupted by a vertical strips - his 'zip'. In his 1948 essay, The Sublime Is Now, Newman proposed the sublime picture that illustrates nothing, symbolises nothing, pure painting, which - with its sensual-aesthetic presence - does not deal with experience but is in itself an experience, as Rothko put it. In this volume Armin Zweite presents and analyses key-works from all the various phases of Barnett Newman's creative output, comprehensively and indepths. Besides offering an interpretation of Newman's paintings and graphic works, Armin Zweite also comments on all the sculptures individually. By taking Newman's painted, plastic and graphic works together this study conveys a more finely differentiated insight into the artist's work than could ever be achieved from an examination of different periods of his output in isolation. (English edition ISBN 978-3- 7757-0795-4) The artist: Barnett Newman (1905-1970). Studied art and philosophy in New York. In 1948, he launched the school of painting Subjects of the Artist. Numerous solo and group exhibitions from 1950 onwards.
