GIOVANNI SEGANTINI

GIOVANNI SEGANTINI (1858-1899)

Based on numerous important paintings and drawings, this extensive publication presents the life and work of Giovanni Segantini, the enthusiastic Divisionist and Symbolist whose work was inspired by light. His desire to translate the bright, clear light he experienced in the alpine world led to an enormous painterly development, one that is evident in all of his creative phases—starting with his time in Brianza, Lombardy, the pictures of farm life in Savognin, and finally, to the apex of his career, characterized by the brightly lit mountain landscapes of the Engadin Valley. Scholarly and literary essays acknowledge the important role Segantini played in reviving landscape painting and paving the way for modernism, and assign him a new place in the history of world art as a painter of light.
