L. S. LOWRY - A LIFE

LAURENCE STEPHEN LOWRY (1887-1976)

In the thirty years since L S Lowry’s death several items have come into the public domain - including collections of private letters, now housed in the archives of The Lowry, the millennium arts centre on the banks of the Irwell, which were made available to the author. Extracts from these will be included in her new biography to give added insight to the man.
‘Shelley Rohde, a journalist who knew Lowry in old age, spins a narrative from entertaining recollections by family and friends...She retells this well-known but desperately sad Shelley Rohde, a journalist who knew Lowry in old age, spins a narrative from story with chatty sympathy, filling out the background of Lowry’s working life as a rent collector - his matchstick people are the one he encountered on his rounds - and his wonderful refusal to adapt to the London art scene... The book is a visual delight, lavishly illustrated with photographs as well as reproductions that emphasise Lowry’s variety, complexity, humanity...”
