LOIS RENNER / PICTURES 1991-2002

LOIS RENNER (1961-)

This catalogue is the first published documentation of works completed by Louis Renner since 1991 and also features his most recent photographs.

Lois Renner was one of Gerhard Richter´s students at the Kunstakademie in Düsseldorf. Today Renner lives and works in Vienna and is one of Austria´s most internationally renowned artists. Last year he received the International Award for Photography at the Buenos Aires Biennale.
Renner´s photographic works show seemingly ordinary depictions of artists´ studios, but the furniture-utterly diverse in scale and consisting of paintings and found objects from his surroundings-confuses the spatial logic and evokes photomontage or digital reprocessing. In reality, Renner rebuilt his old Salzburg studio on a scale of one to ten in his studio in Vienna, and proceeded to photograph this carefully composed model from different points of view. This photographic method is explicitly oriented on the complex structure of Old Master paintings, thus uniting the possibilities of both painting and photography media.
The picture index, which was compiled in collaboration with the artist, documents the development of Lois Renner´s work since 1991, including his newest pieces.

The artist:

Lois Renner, born in 1961 in Salzburg. In 1981-1984 master class of the Austrian painting craft, Baden near Vienna. In 1984/85 Mozarteum, Salzburg. In 1985-1988 Rheinische Kunstakademie university, Düsseldorf.
