PIA FRIES. PAINTINGS

PIA FRIES (1955-)

The painter Pia Fries studied in the eighties under Gerhard Richter at the Kunstakademie in Düsseldorf. Her paintings are defined by how and in what form she applies the paint, thereby not allowing composition and coloration to be the sole determinants of the way they look. Rather paint as material – its surface producing patterns and crisscrosses – generates painterly suggestions. Like islands, the paint-marks hover above a white ground, either isolated or linked by color trails and strands. In the past years a new element has been added, serigraph prints that compete with the painted areas in a trompe-l’œil way.
This publication presents a good survey of her paintings over the past 15 years.
