THE HISTORY OF BRITISH ART VOL. I-III

THE HISTORY OF BRITISH ART

600 - 1600, edited by Tim Ayers, covers the period from the reconnection with a Christian-Roman tradition in the seventh century to the traumatic break from Rome at the time of the Reformation.

1600 - 1870, edited by David Bindman, covers the period from 1600-1870, often considered the Golden Age of British art. The establishment of a modern Britain and its relations with Europe and beyond provide a focus for this volume, which examines the work of artists from Van Dyck to Turner, from Hilliard to Blake and from Reynolds to the Pre-Raphaelites.

1870 to now, is edited by Chris Stephens. In this volume, London emerges as a mid-point between Europe and America, particularly the centres of the avant-garde in Paris and New York. Leading critics examine modern and post-modern artists from the High Victorian period through to the counter-culture of the 1960s, the Young British Artists of the 1990s, and beyond.

The History of British Art offers a thorough overview of the origins, development and impact of art and visual culture in Britain from the seventh century to the twenty-first. In three sumptuously illustrated volumes, available separately or as a three-volume set in a luxurious slipcase, the world's leading experts trace the remarkable story of British art from the Sutton Hoo burial to the present day. Commissioned under the auspices of Tate Britain, the national collection of British art, and the Yale Center for British Art, the premier institution for the study of British art in North America, a team of international scholars has assembled a remarkable resource for specialist and enthusiast alike. Each volume, fully illustrated in colour throughout, comprises substantial surveys of the major subject areas, while focused analysis is given to key themes and artworks, supplemented by timelines, bibliographies and a comprehensive index.
