THOMAS SCHEIBITZ - About 90 Elements / TOD im Dschungel

THOMAS SCHEIBITZ (1968-)

This first solo exhibition in Ireland by the young German artist Thomas Scheibitz comprises a selection of new paintings and sculptures.  Scheibitz’s paintings have a distinctly post-Cubist orientation, his puzzle-like forms are carefully composed in tightly connected compositions locked into shallow spaces. These forms suggest fragmentary landscapes and architectural elements, at once recognizable and abstract. Broken and fragmented, these images are deconstructed to mere formalist devices - geometric shapes, organic masses and flat colourful components from which he creates highly-distorted spatial illusions.  His paintings are filled with consumerist references derived from images collected from the media – illustrations, movies, television, magazines and Japanese comics, breaking them down until abstraction takes over from representation. Through abstraction, he offers a futuristic vision of a fast-paced consumer society, where nature and technology merge, and realism is replaced by the higher aesthetic truth of pop design.
