J.M.W. Turner - The "LUCERNE" sketchbook

J. M. W. Turner (1775–1851)

The sketchbook reproduced within this unique publication includes watercolour sketches Turner made on his final trip to Lucerne, capturing the beautiful Mount Rigi, a landscape he returned to again and again. Turner made these sketches after painting his famous The Blue Rigi, Sunrise, 1842 and they reveal his masterful hand as he portrays the ever-changing moods of the Swiss Alps, tantalisingly depicted through rainy showers, sunbeams filtering through clouds and rainbows across the blue mountain peaks.

This edition of the sketchbook reproduces Turner’s watercolours in near-facsimile, with an illustrated introduction by Turner curator David Blayney Brown that discusses their background and impact. Splashes of paint and finger smudges bring the hand of the master to life, and the images across the pages of The Lucerne Sketchbook are as fresh as when they were made.
